Hotel Y Casona El Carmen

Loved this hotel. Ended up here for one night very unexpectedly and delighted we did. The hotel has a family run feel to it and very laid back vibes. We were attracted to this hotel over the other local hotels as it has a pool. We were pleasantly surprised that it's a heated outdoor pool so not that freezing feel when you enter! My kids spent 2 days at the pool. We checked out at 12 noon but could spend the day at the pool and there's a poolside shower and toilet which is great when you've checked out. It's about a 10/15 min walk from Candas, feels like nothing but a nice leisurely stroll away and so close to the beach. We ate in the restaurant for dinner and breakfast. Kids had fried chicken and chips, Calamari and chips and I had the burger and chips, all very nice. Breakfast buffet was basic but had everything, we didn't arrive until 10 (finishes at 10.30) so we probably would have had more options earlier. The lady of the house made an appearance after our dinner and asked if we enjoyed it, I think she actually did the cooking, very friendly welcoming touch. The man on reception/General manager/owner was so nice too, gave us his charger to use, speaks great English and hires great friendly young staff most with some English. Shout out to Marta who I had great chats with at the bar. All in all, would highly recommend for an authentic Spanish break. Read some other reviews, most customers rate this hotel highly but read some low rated scores and I think if you're expecting fancy, look for and pay for 4 or 5 star hotel. The hotel is very well kept and very clean but yes there are signs of ageing and some areas that could do with modernisation but for me it adds to the charm of this fabulous family run hotel. We got the room, they sent us to a nearby brick house without help with the luggage, the worst room (small elevator) the worst internet, it was hot, there was no air conditioner!!! . We asked to leave immediately, we left for another hotel (at a cheaper price) and yet they charged us... I do not recommend this hotel!! I will ask to be careful!

Kids loved it! It's got a fine swimming pool with a nice fountain and a playground. There's a table football and the café has some board games. There's a primitive gym in a small room with no windows, some of the machines were broken when we were there. Restaurant serves good food, but the price is higher than at the restaurants in neighbouring Candas. The fine wine they are serving is priced very reasonably though. The location is good. A rocky, but beautiful beach at a 10 minute walk nearby, but at low tide (around 14:00) you can't swim there (no water, just rocks). Several beaches, Oviedo, Gijon are all close by car. There's a small train station with trains to Gijon at the beach.
